Ansiedad

Sin embargo cuando la ansiedad es injustificada, excesiva y persistente, o interfiere con el funcionamiento cotidiano, puede categorizarse como problema psiquiátrico. Incluyen síntomas característicos de pensamientos intensivos molestos, mayor respuesta psicofisiológica y evaluaciones intensamente desagradables de las emociones. Cuando una persona trata de evitar ciertas sensaciones corporales, emociones, pensamientos, recuerdos; en ese intento termina exacerbando los mismos, dando como resultado una sensación aún más grande de pérdida de control. Es decir las personas con un patrón habitual de evitación conductual tendrán mas probabilidades de desarrollar más miedo y más huida ante una crisis de ansiedad o ataque de pánico, que las personas que aceptan mejor sus experiencias internas. Depresión

Otros síntomas pueden incluir desregulación en el sistema físico, fatiga, dificultad para concentrarse y falta de capacidad para afrontar los desafíos de la vida. La persona experimenta la depresión como dolorosamente opuesta con su nivel habitual o deseado de funcionamiento y el estado de ánimo deprimido suele permanecer por mucho tiempo con pensamiento rumiativos, repetitivos y analíticos, que aumentan el deterioro de ánimo.

Diversos estudios realizados han demostrado que la terapia cognitiva basada en mindfulness puede ayudar no solo a combatir la depresión sino a evitar que vuelva a aparecer en el futuro. Esto es debido a que la depresión no es un trastorno del cerebro o de la química cerebral, sino un patrón de comportamiento, un modo de actuar y de pensar con el que reacciona una persona cuando en su vida aparecen determinadas circunstancias o sucesos adversos que suelen implicar la pérdida de algo valioso para esa persona. Por este motivo, la terapia basada en mindfulness es la más completa que existe en la actualidad para tratar la depresión, así como otros trastornos psicológicos.
